Department store owner Myer cut another 35 executive roles at its head office in Melbourne, taking recent redundancies to more than 100 in the past year as chief executive John King clamps down on costs amid one of the toughest trading environments in decades.

A Myer spokesman confirmed to The Australian late on Wednesday that 35 jobs were being eliminated, but said the retailer would maintain its strong connection to customers with many of the roles in back-office and administration.

Since his appointment two years ago, Mr King has swung an axe at Myer’s bloated cost structure and last year made 50 head office roles redundant. The year before that another 30 executive and senior management roles were also removed.

A Myer spokesman said as part of its “Customer First Plan” Myer was continually reviewing the business to ensure it was operating in the most efficient and productive way, in the best interests customers and shareholders, with a continued focus on improving the financial performance of the business.

“As such, we have identified opportunities across various teams to simplify structures, remove duplication, and amend some reporting lines,” the spokesman said.

“As a result of this, a number of management, business support, administration and duplicate roles will be leaving the business to align our structure more closely with our customers.

“We will be providing every support to the team members leaving the business, and we thank them for the significant contribution they have made.”

The spokesman added there will be no impact to customer service as a result of these changes, with no changes to the number of team members on the floor or service hours.
