Former Qantas director to be next chairman of Myer

Myer has tapped former Spotless Group chairman and one-time Qantas director Garry Hounsell to be its next chairman, as the department store faces unprecedented challenges to its business.
Myer, which last week posted its worst profit since listing on the Australian Securities Exchange, has confirmed that it now has a timetable that will see chairman Paul McClintock eventually step down, to be replaced by newly appointed Myer director Mr Hounsell.
Myer said yesterday that Mr Hounsell, who most recently was chairman and non-executive director of Spotless Group and has also served on the boards of Qantas and Mitchell Communications Group, would join the department store as a new director.
It is intended that Mr Hounsell will be nominated as chairman of the company upon the retirement of Mr McClintock, with the current Myer chairman to announce his transition plans at the Myer annual general meeting in November.
Mr Hounsell, who is also a director of Treasury Wine Estates, Helloworld, Dulux Group and the Commonwealth Superannuation Corporation, has “first-hand experience of delivering transformational change in the face of competitive disruption,” Myer said.
