Billionaire Annie Cannon-Brookes has scooped up more real estate in Mission Beach, the far north Queensland hamlet, buying a prime 19ha beachfront residential site for $4.5m.

Ms Cannon-Brookes, the estranged wife of Atlassian co-founder Mike Cannon-Brookes, is familiar with the region given her ambitious plans to redevelop the nearby resort of Dunk Island destroyed by Cyclone Larry in 2011.

However, locals are now saying Ms Cannon-Brookes, who purchased Dunk Island in 2022 for $23.65m, was rumoured to be looking to sell the island which she is yet to finish renovating.

Other notables to take an interest in Dunk Island include James Mawhinney, the beleaguered founder of investment scheme Mayfair 101. At one stage Mawhinney planned to buy up billions of dollars worth of real estate in the hamlet including vacant sites and caravan parks for his coterie of mum and dad investors.

Some have likened Mission Beach to Byron Bay on the NSW north coast 20 years ago.

According to Core Logic, an entity known as Green Seaweed 1 Pty Ltd, the same company through which Cannon-Brookes purchased Dunk Island, bought the 103 Nonda Street, Mission Beach, site for $4.5m in May. The vacant holding was purchased from Dodd Corporation Super Pty Ltd.

Mission Beach sources said they were unsure of Ms Cannon-Brookes plans for the site which is zoned residential.

The property, fronting Lot 8, 73 Explorers Drive, South Mission Beach, is being marketed by Barbara Wolveridgeof Sotheby’s Queensland and Steve Wiltshire of Mission Beach Real Estate.

The house has five bedrooms, five bathrooms and 12 car parks and can host up to 16 guests according to a luxury rental site.

Samantha Hardwick paid $8m for the estate in 2021 according to CoreLogic.

Villa BE will be auctioned on August 22, and it will be sold fully furnished.
