Sydney International Airport on the last day of 2024 is heaving. What better way to escape the crazed masses than a complimentary spa treatment in the Qantas first class lounge?

The airline knows it needs to look after its first class and platinum status passengers and while it has had many high-profile stumbles on the customer service front in recent years, it delivers in spades at the lounge. Customers can choose from one of four complimentary 20-minute treatments at its LaGaia Spa while waiting for their flights. Mine is exceptional.

The Qantas first class lounge at Sydney has five treatment rooms.

I choose the “dream aligner” hot stone massage, and with her hands Thai-born Kesorn finds knots in my shoulders that I hadn’t known were there, then pushes the hot stones up the sides of my spine and across my now released shoulders.

The treatment rooms are a peaceful escape from the chaotic feeling of the airport during the peak Christmas holiday period. If it weren’t for my regular pre-boarding anxiety I could easily imagine I’m at a spa in the Daintree rather than about to embark on a 25-hour flight. Qantas has five treatment rooms and offers facials, foot reflexology and head, neck and scalp massage in addition to the hot stone option I’ve taken.

Clearly, with only five rooms the treatments have to be booked. A few are turned away when I await mine and I’m told Chairman’s club and first class passengers are rung in advance to see if they’d like a treatment.

The spa is excellent and is definitely one of those winning extras that keep Qantas’ loyal passengers hooked on the need to keep platinum or beyond.
