Travel between Australia and Israel is set to become easier after an agreement in which Qantas and Israeli carrier El Al will begin services between the countries either using their own aircraft or via code shares with other carriers.

Customers of the two airlines will be able to book certain flights operated by the other, as well as earn and redeem frequent-flyer points on their journey.

The partnership, signed yesterday by Qantas International chief executive Gareth Evans and El Al CEO David Maimon, is expected to link Qantas flights between Australia and Asia (specifically Hong Kong and Bangkok) to El Al’s flights between Asia and Israel’s financial and technology centre, Tel Aviv. It will also connect Qantas flights from Sydney to South Africa with El Al’s services from Tel Aviv to Johannesburg.

Mr Evans said although Qantas and El Al had an interline arrangement, the new codeshare aspect was part of Qantas’s strategy to improve travel options by building long-term partnerships with other airlines.

“The timing’s especially good when you think about the growing number of Australian companies doing business with Israel’s world-class technology and start-up sectors,” he said.

Mr Maimon said: “To have the national carriers of both Israel and Australia further enhance co-operation will strengthen the ties between our countries and provide a seamless mode of travel.”

The arrangement comes as Malcolm Turnbull and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu signed legislative agreements to foster business ties by making travel between Israel and Australia more efficient.
