Qantas plane lands safely after emergency issued
The airline acknowledged it could have been an “unsettling” experience for those on board.
A Qantas plane has landed safely in Broken Hill following a serious issue with its landing gear that forced it to circle for half an hour.
QantasLink flight QF2017, which left Sydney just after 11am, was declared a “7700” emergency on the plane’s transponder.
The flight, operated by a Q400 Dash 8, landed safely in Broken Hill, in far western NSW, after circling over the city’s airport for about 30 minutes.
The plane was greeted by two fire trucks and a couple of ambulances, and passengers were spoken to by emergency services on the tarmac.
“The captain of our Sydney-to-Broken Hill flight today elected to do a go-around on approach into Broken Hill, after identifying an issue with the landing gear,” a Qantas spokesperson said.
“Our pilots are highly trained to handle situations like this and the flight has since landed safely in Broken Hill. We understand this would have been an unsettling experience for customers and we thank them for co-operating with our crew.”
The aircraft will be inspected by engineers before returning to service.
