Qantas cuts back on flight meal numbers to reduce food waste

Qantas is cutting back on the number of meals it carries on some overnight flights in a bid to reduce the amount of food it throws away.
The cutbacks have been in place since last month and will see a 2 per cent reduction in meals carried on some international, overnight flights, the airline said.
It means that on a fully packed A380 superjumbo, about 10 passengers could miss out on a meal.
“We constantly monitor the catering requirements on our flights to make sure we are meeting our customers’ needs and minimising the amount of waste we throw away each day,” said Philip Capps, Qantas’s head of customer product and service development.
“Like most airlines, we make small adjustments to the catering depending on the time of day, duration of the flight and customer preference.”
Since the meal reductions were put in place, Qantas said it had seen no negative impact to customers as the airline provides alternative meals on flights where demand is unusually high.
Virgin Australia has also reduced the meals it carries on overnight, international flights.
