A cargo plane has put out a mayday call before making an emergency landing at Sydney Airport.

The plane had flown from Melbourne and completed two loops above Sydney, circling for about 30 minutes before landing at the airport at about 3.30am on Tuesday.

An aviation expert has told NewsWire the pilot made a mayday call - following a mechanical issue - allowing the plane to fly above the city outside curfew hours.

The ASL Airlines Australia plane has a Qantas tail number, but is operated entirely by ASL Airlines.

The plane has since flown on to, and landed, at Brisbane.

Its typical Melbourne to Sydney route sees the aircraft come into Sydney Airport from the south, rather than flying over the CBD and suburbs.
