Woman dies after being crushed by tree in Stirling in Adelaide Hills
A large tree has tragically killed a woman after it came down in strong winds and crushed her car in the Adelaide Hills overnight.
A woman has tragically died after the car she was driving was crushed by a large tree in the Adelaide Hills overnight.
South Australia Police said emergency services were called to Mount Barker Road in Stirling, about 15km southeast of Adelaide CBD, about 10.20pm when a large tree branch was snapped off in strong winds.
Police said the branch fell on top of a white Toyota wagon that had been travelling west, crushing a 59-year-old Crafers woman who was at the wheel.
Tragically, the woman died at the scene, while a passenger, a 26-year-old Aldgate woman, was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Police said a second car travelling east was also hit by the branch.
That driver, a 56-year-old Aldgate woman, was treated at the scene but was not seriously injured.
Mount Barker Road near Gould Road remained closed in both directions on Thursday morning while emergency services worked to clear the tree and an arborist assessed the scene.
The woman’s death takes the lives lost on South Australia’s roads in 2020 to 76, down from 95 at the same time last year.
