Transport NSW warns of delays on train lines across Sydney

Sydneysiders catching a train home have been warned to allow for extra travel time as temperatures rise across the city, slowing train speeds.

Analysis: Australia’s heatwave plagued with threat of severe thunderstorm activity

Sydneysiders travelling on one of the city’s busiest train lines have been warned to expect 60 minute delays as Transport NW works to fix signal and train issues.

Travellers are being urged to allow up to 60 minutes extra travel time if using the T4 Eastern suburbs and Illawarra line on Wednesday afternoon.

Transport NSW says urgent signal repairs are being done at Sydenham while urgent train repairs were also underway at Sutherland.

“Some trains will have changed stops and leave from different platforms at short notice,” Transport NSW said on Wednesday afternoon.

“Services may be less frequent and trips may take longer than usual between Sutherland and Cronulla, between Waterfall and Sutherland and between Central and Bondi Junction.”

It comes as the majority of train lines continue to run slow as trains have been ordered to operate at restricted speed due to the extreme heat conditions hitting the city on Wednesday.

“Due to the extreme heat conditions this afternoon, some trains will be required to run at reduced speeds at various areas of the network,” Transport NSW said.

“This may lead to longer than normal journey times.”

Sydney experienced extreme temperatures on Wednesday, with Penrith recording a state-high temperature of 39.9 degrees at 2.49pm.

Commuters are encouraged to check the Transport NSW website for updates.
