Topless man wielding machete chases alleged attempted shoplifter from Adelaide IGA
Incredible footage shows the moment a man loses his shirt in a tussle with an alleged shoplifter, before chasing him from the store with a machete.
A shopkeeper has called a topless man wielding a machete ‘a nice guy’ after he chased a would-be thief out of an Adelaide IGA, defending staff and other customers.
The man reportedly armed himself with a machete used by the store to cut fruit following a scuffle with another man, who had allegedly verbally abused staff before attempting to steal groceries at the Hackham store.
CCTV showed the alleged suspect at the register visibly yelling at staff before taking his groceries and attempting to walk off.
Store manager Baggio Wang told 9News he had made the 15 year-old girl serving him cry.
“Swearing, yelling, abusing to pretty much all the staff and the customers, it was very loud,” Mr Wang said.
“No one deserved this, even me – we’re not supposed to deal with this sort of thing in the supermarket.”
But the man was quickly confronted by a second shopper, who threw shopping at the suspect in an attempt to get him to leave.
The vision shows a scuffle between the man, where the second man had his shirt ripped off before he managed to find the machete in what appears to be the back room of the store and chased the alleged assailant out of the store.
Mr Wang said the man had only been trying to buy a Mother’s Day gift when the incident occurred on Sunday.
“He’s a really nice guy,” Mr Wang said.
Fortunately no one was injured during the violent incident.
Police are now investigating and said no charges had yet been laid.
The store took to Facebook on Monday, thanking locals who helped staff during the ordeal.
“As we always say we won’t hesitate to expose any wrong behaviour in our community,” the store posted.
“We are only a small supermarket, but big community fits in our heart.
“Can’t change our community, we simply just close the door!”
