Test batsman Travis Head is preparing for the Test series in Coffs Harbour after being forced out of Adelaide

His bags were unpacked in an Airbnb and Travis Head was on a golf course when the call came to get out of South Australia.

Travis Head won’t enjoy the extra time at home he was hoping for to “freshen up” for the Test series against India but will put an extra two weeks training to good use.

The Test batsman, and South Australian captain, made a “mad rush” from a trip away with teammates to Coffs Harbour as Cricket Australia evacuated players from Adelaide this week amid a COVID-19 outbreak.

It was an extra curveball in a summer where there could be plenty more for Head, who will star at Coffs before heading to Sydney for a series of Australia A matches before the first Test starting December 17.

“You have to be adaptable, that‘s the main focus of the summer,” Head said on Friday.

“We were on a golf course three days ago and now we’re in Coffs.

“We’re here now, we can prepare as well as we can. We’ve already come out of one bubble, so we have experienced that already, and continue to take the things we have done for this as well.

“We know how to get on with it and can prepare in a couple of days or two weeks. It’s nice to have two weeks and not rush for exams.”

Head was a Sheffield Shield success story as a lead-in to the Test summer, racking up 455 runs with two hundreds, including an unbeaten 171 against Tasmania.

It was enough to secure his Test spot, but he conceded there was plenty of competition for spots in the batting line-up.

“It should be tough to get in the Australian cricket team, there should be competition for spots,” Head said.

“A strong shield season and a strong environment means a strong Australian cricket team.

“I was happy with what I was able to produce, and hopefully I can use this two weeks to get my game back to where it was.”
