Tate McDermott and Liam Wright retain Queensland Reds co-captaincy
The Queensland Reds have named the same co-captains for their 2025 Super Rugby Pacific season.
Wallabies pair Tate McDermott and Liam Wright will co-captain Queensland for a fourth successive year despite the presence of Harry Wilson – Australia’s current skipper – in the Reds squad.
Reds coach Les Kiss said halfback McDermott and flanker Wright “underpinned” Queensland’s values, and had the full support of Wilson.
“The Reds are in a good place for them to be leading us into a big year,” Kiss said ahead of his team’s Super Rugby Pacific campaign starting next month.
“There is a lot of respect from coaches and fellow players for Liam and Tate, and the job they do as captains.
“I spoke to Harry, and he’s happy to follow (McDermott and Wright) and that’s important. I sleep well with these two boys being our captains.
“The stability and continuity that the two boys bring is massive for us. I can’t go past Liam and Tate.”

Wright, who captained the Wallabies in one Test last year before suffering a serious shoulder injury, said he and McDermott were becoming “more cohesive” as leaders each year.
“We bounce ideas off each other really well,” said 27-year-old Wright, who has 84 Queensland appearances to his credit.
McDermott, who skippered the Wallabies in 2023, said captaining Queensland was a “big honour”.
“I’m a proud Queenslander who loves representing the state,” said 26-year-old McDermott, who has made 91 appearances for the Reds.
“It’s exciting times again to lead Queensland with Liam.
“It’s a great feeling to know the trust is there from Les, after our first season working with him and his coaching team in 2024, because he is doing a brilliant job leading the club.”
The Reds open their Super Rugby Pacific season on February 21 against Moana Pasifika at Suncorp Stadium.
Before that, they head to England and Northern Ireland for matches against Bristol (January 31) and Ulster in Belfast (February 7).
