Sydney light rail crash brings inner west line to a halt

A crash between two trams has brought one light rail service to a halt just ahead of the Matildas World Cup opener.

A light rail crash has caused havoc for commuters ahead of the women’s World Cup opener.

Two light rail vehicles collided at Central station just before 5pm, knocking out a section of the L1 Dulwich Hill line.

After the collision, light rail services were not running between Central and Convention Centre on the L1 Dulwich Hill Line.

The line has since been reopened, however, transport officials are warning there are delays on all light rail lines due to the incident.

Passengers are advised to allow extra travel time and make alternative travel arrangements,” a Transport Management Centre spokesperson said.

The crash occurred just hours before Accor Stadium was to fill with 80,000 fans keen to cheer on the Matildas on the first day of the FIFA Woman’s World Cup.

Live sites have also been set up around the city for fans to enjoy, with the largest stationed in Darling Harbour, near the Convention Centre light rail stop.

Thursday’s incident comes more than two months after a teenager was killed when she became trapped under a light rail vehicle in the CBD while she had been climbing over the link between carriages.
