A horror car crash in St Mary’s has claimed the life of a Sudanese war hero who fought to defend the land of his people and transformed the lives of many others, especially his family.

Lual Awan Lueth, 49, died after police spotted a dark-grey Holden Insignia accelerate towards the Great Western Highway from Mamre Road in St Mary’s about 4am on Tuesday.

When police found the sedan it had crashed into Mr Leuth’s silver Toyota Corolla hatchback, he died at the scene.

The driver of the sedan had fled on foot and was later found in the backyard of a resident’s property on Chapel Street, where he was attempting to steal clothes.

He was arrested a short time later, and was taken to Nepean Hospital under police guard for mandatory testing.

It’s understood the offender is “well known” to police.
