South Australia has recorded one new death and 2921 new cases of Covid-19 — a drop from more than 4000 the previous day.

“This is a second day in a row that we’ve seen a reduction in SA,” Premier Steven Marshall said on Tuesday.

The Premier provided the Covid-19 update via video, as he continues his isolation period following a dinner with his Covid-positive daughter.

He said the death was a woman aged in her 50s.

Mr Marshall revealed there were 211 people in hospital, with 22 in intensive care and four of them on a ventilator.

The Premier said SA had managed to “avoid a massive disaster” with the virus after introducing some restrictions last month.

“(I’m) very pleased that there is now a stabilisation of the new infections in SA,” he said.

“This is likely to bounce around and the report that we received today certainly showed that there’s still going to be a further increase, but nothing like what we were expecting in late December.”

Mr Marshall said it was expected that SA would experience its peak with Omicron in the third or fourth week of January.

He said 44 per cent of eligible South Australians had received their booster shots so far.

There are 480 SA Health staff, including 41 from SA Ambulance, who have tested positive for the virus.

A total of 766 SA Health staff are furloughed, Mr Marshall added.

People in SA have been urged to work from home this month, but Mr Marshall indicated that may not be the case in February.

“We are asking people to work from home, if possible, through the month of January,” Mr Marshall said.

“That gives us time to lower that increase in the new cases, which lowers our hospitalisation and lowers our admission into intensive care.

“We’ll be able to provide further updates as we get further into this pandemic, but the good news is it looks like the peak will be hit well within January and then hopefully we’ll start to see those case numbers reduce right throughout February.”

Mr Marshall said although there would be restrictions in place for Australia Day, he still expected people to be able to enjoy festivities safely.
