Sophie Molineux and Ellyse Perry star in WPL final victory
Three Australians have lifted the Women’s Premier League title after a star turn from an outstanding duo.
A single three-wicket over from Sophie Molineux and more runs from evergreen superstar Ellyse Perry ensured they became the first Australians to lift the Women’s Premier League crown for.
The duo and national teammate Georgia Wareham all tasted success in Royal Challengers Bangalore’s cruisy eight-wicket win over Meg Lanning’s Delhi Capitals after Molineux, named player of the final, “turned the match on its head” to cap a massive two months that included her Australian recall.
With Dehli cruising at 0-64, Molineux took three wickets in the eighth over to start a collapse that ended with the Capitals all out for just 113. Molineux finished with 3-20 from her four overs.
Perry then completed a week of brilliant batting performances, which propelled her to the top of the tournament’s run-scoring list, by guiding RCB coolly to their target with three balls to spare, finishing unbeaten on 35 from 37 balls.
But she said it was Molineux who “turned the match on its head”.
“It’s pretty bonkers to be honest,” Perry beamed after a brilliant tournament.

“This is a whole other level for us and women’s cricket. The standard of cricket has been unbelievable – it’s been so much fun to play.”
Perry ended the tournament on 347 runs, nicking the orange cap as the tournament’s leading scorer from Lanning, who amassed 331.
Lanning, who still showed her class despite having retired from international cricket, said her team was outplayed.
“Disappointing to not get it done tonight. We played some good cricket through the tournament, but it was about not playing well on the day,” she said.
“Crazy things happen, and every game has been pretty close. You win some, you lose some. Unfortunately, it was not to be for us tonight.”
Perry and her Aussie teammates will head straight to Bangladesh for a series of ODIs and T20s which begins on Thursday.
