School holidays thrown into chaos as 14 flights from Sydney airport cancelled

Chaotic scenes have again erupted at a major Aussie airport as commuters are rocked by more flight cancellations.

School holiday chaos at one of the country’s biggest airports is showing no sign of settling down, with commuters at Sydney Airport rocked by a fourth day of cancelled or delayed flights.

Delays had eased from the weekend, but an additional three domestic flights departing from Melbourne were cancelled on Monday morning.

Another 10 from Brisbane were also cancelled.

Crew shortages, strong winds and a knock-on effect from the weekend’s delays have been blamed for the cancellations and delays.

However the bulk of 800 services originating from Sydney Airport were running on schedule and all runways are in operation.

It’s understood four Virgin Australia return flights were cancelled on Monday.

Flights from Qantas and Jetstar also affected – these were put down to minor mechanical issues that had been resolved by the morning.

A spokesperson for Virgin Australia apologised to any customers who had been affected by the delays.

“We apologise to anyone impacted by delayed or cancelled services and we continue to work hard to ensure our guests reach their destinations,” a spokesperson said.

“We continue to communicate with guests whose flights are disrupted and ensure they are accommodated on the next available services.”

More than 100 flights have been cancelled at Sydney Airport in the past three days, with the transit hub already under extra strain from the start of school holidays.

Strong winds impacting runway access and the repositioning of aircraft and crew have been blamed for the delays.
