Teen sensation Sam Konstas has been included in Australia’s squad for the World Test Championship final, with the return of Cameron Green from injury set to ensure some significant selection debate.

Konstas, 19, and veteran Usman Khawaja are the only other openers in the squad, which also covers the two-Test series against the West Indies in July, after selectors overlooked Marcis Harris despite the Victorian leading all-comers in English county cricket this season with three hundreds and nearly 750 runs.

Green returns having made a hundred of his own during a short UK stint after recovering from the back surgery that ruled him out of all of the home summer.

But he’ll play as a batter only and could be an opening option after an excellent debut from all-rounder Beau Webster, who replaced Mitch Marsh in the Test team against India and also travelled to Sri Lanka.

Aussie chairman of selectors George Bailey said match fitness was as important as runs for the returning Green.

“I think it’s great (Green) is playing, that’s fantastic that he’s back and he’s returned well, it’s fantastic to see him get some runs,” he said.

“I think his ability to back up innings to innings, match to match, I think he pulled up pretty sore that first innings having not played for a little while.

“All of those guys, we know he’s a quality player, we know he’s proven performer at Test level.

“Whether and how many runs he gets are not necessarily as much of a concern as much as getting some match play under his belt.”

Captain Pat Cummins and fast bowler Josh Hazlewood also return after missing the Sri Lankan series.

“We are fortunate and looking forward to having Pat (Cummins), Josh (Hazlewood) and Cam (Green) back in the squad,” Bailey said

“The team finished the WTC cycle with an impressive series victory in Sri Lanka following an equally strong summer in defeating India for the first time in a decade.

“Those series capped a consistent performance across the two-year cycle and now presents us with the incredibly exciting opportunity to defend the World Test Championship.

“It means a lot to the group to reach the final and they are very much looking forward to the challenge South Africa will present at Lord’s.”

Josh Inglis, who made a maiden Test hundred in Galle, is also in the squad and gives selectors much to mull over when it comes to the batting line-up to face South Africa’s pace attack led by Kagiso Rabada.

After his bowling action was cleared in the wake of his success in Sri Lanka, spinner Matthew Kuhnemann has also been included in a line-up that has fast bowler Brendan Doggett as a travelling reserve.

Australia won the last World Test Championship final against India in 2023 at The Oval.
