The carer charged over the manslaughter of Ann Smith has been bailed and is allowed to babysit her young granddaughter.

The carer charged over the manslaughter of Adelaide woman Ann Smith, who police said died in “disgusting and degrading circumstances”, has been granted home detention bail.

Rosa Maria Maione, 69, will not continue working as a carer but she will be allowed to babysit her six-month-old granddaughter.

The Adelaide Magistrates Court on Thursday allowed her to live at a Hectorville home on strict conditions.

Maione, who appeared in court by video-link, has agreed to hand over her Italian passport and may not apply for an Australian passport.

She was arrested last week after a months-long investigation into the death of Ms Smith, who died in hospital in April.

Police allege Ms Smith, who had severe septic shock and multi-organ failure, suffered extreme neglect and had been confined to a cane chair for more than a year in the lead-up to her death.

The 54-year-old had NDIS funding for six hours of care each day.

Maione will return before the court in April next year.
