Queensland’s Parliament House is now the centre of a new COVID-19 scare after a visit by children from a Brisbane school which has been shutdown.

Three groups of about 30 Year 6 students from Chatswood Hills State School, which was closed due to one of its outside school hours care employees testing positive to the virus, visited Parliament House on a school excursion on Wednesday.

A relative of one of the two teenagers who lied to return to Brisbane from Melbourne attends the school.

After the activities of the two 19-year-olds was revealed, Speaker of parliament Curtis Pitt on Thursday directed seven staff members to take leave and get tested for COVID-19.

“Last night a certified deep clean took place in the precinct of any area where that tour may have visited including toilets. There are no other school tours this week,” Mr Pitt said.

“We have not received any information from Queensland Health that any student on the tour has tested positive. It is only a very remote possibility that any transmission could have taken place.

“However, the Parliamentary Service have taken these steps to ensure the safety of people who work on the precinct and people who visit it.”

Parliament is not sitting at the moment.
