Queen Elizabeth’s ‘secret’ letter to Sydney

The late Queen left one last mystery to the people of Sydney, locked within a building that was dedicated to her great-grandmother.

The hidden secrets of the Queen Victoria Building

The late Queen wrote a secret letter to the people of Sydney, but no one will know what it says for more than 60 years.

Hidden in a time capsule in the Queen Victoria Building in Sydney’s CBD, the letter was written by Queen Elizabeth II to celebrate the restoration of the building, which was built in 1898 to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria – the Queen’s great-grandmother.

Written in November 1986 and addressed to the Lord Mayor of Sydney, the instruction reads: “On a suitable day to be selected by you in the year 2085AD, would you please open this envelope and convey to the citizens of Sydney my message to them.”

A letter written by the late Queen Elizabeth II addressed to the people of Sydney cannot be opened until 2085.

The Queen Victoria Building was nearly demolished in the 1950s for open space and carparks before a bid to restore the historic building was ultimately successful.

The restoration was completed in 1986, prompting the mysterious letter to be written.
