‘Qld deserves nothing less’: Big shake-up planned for Qld LNP
One day after Deb Frecklington announced she was stepping down as Queensland LNP leader, an MP has put his hand up for the party’s top job.
The future of the Queensland LNP is set to be decided in coming days, after Deb Frecklington stood down from the party’s top job.
David Crisafulli and David Janetzki have issued statements saying they will be vying for the role of leader and deputy leader of the LNP respectively.
Ms Frecklington, who failed to win over voters with her “big, bold, ambitious plan” in Saturday’s election, announced on Monday she would be stepping down as the party’s leader, despite saying otherwise on the night.
Ms Frecklington said while her first instinct was to “fight on”, she had since spent time with her family and decided the right move was to stand down.
On Tuesday, her deputy leader Tim Mander announced he would not be standing for re-election as the party’s deputy leader, paving the way for a new-look opposition.
Ms Frecklington will convene a party meeting to decide the next leaders as soon as the Electoral Commission of Queensland has finalised the results.
In a statement, Mr Crisafulli, the member for Broadwater, confirmed he would be a candidate for the leadership position.
“I nominate as someone who can offer the discipline to hold the government to account and the energy to start the four-year task of preparing the LNP for government in 2024,” he wrote.
“Our party, our supporters and those who chose not to support us this time around deserve nothing less.
“In coming days, I will be asking my colleagues for their support and sharing with them my plan for rebuilding.”
Mr Crisafulli said he wanted to speak with his colleagues before making any comment, but took the opportunity to thank Ms Frecklington and Mr Mander.
“I want to acknowledge the tireless effort (they) have put into the party’s leadership over the last three years, and particularly throughout the campaign,” he wrote.
“Politics can be cruel and we are all hurting following Saturday’s result.
“Deb and Tim can be very proud of their work ethic and long days trying to secure victory for the LNP.”
Toowoomba South MP David Janetzki also confirmed on Tuesday that he will be nominating as a candidate for the party’s deputy leader position.
“These are matters to be determined by my parliamentary colleagues in the days ahead,” he wrote.
“As such, I will not be making any further public statements.”
A former councillor, Mr Crisafulli was the member for Mundingburra and the local government minister under the Newman government before losing his seat in the 2015 whitewash.
He moved to the Gold Coast and won the seat of Broadwater in 2017, and most recently served as the LNP spokesman for tourism and the environment.
