Qantas boss Alan Joyce splashes $19m on historic 15-room mansion on Mosman Bay

Take a look inside the historic Mosman Bay mansion that Qantas boss Alan Joyce has snapped up for an eye-watering sum.

It’s got six bedrooms, water views, a wine cellar, and its own cinema.

And now one Sydney’s most prestigious addresses belongs to Qantas boss Alan Joyce.

Mr Joyce, 55, and his husband Shane Lloyd are trading up from their inner-city apartment in the Rocks after dropping a staggering $19m on an harbourfront mansion at Mosman Bay.

The palatial 1908 Federation residence – which last sold for $1.25 million in 1993 – features 15 rooms across three storeys and has two massive decks overlooking the water.

A tiered garden descends to a netted harbour pool, a jetty and private berth suitable for a 7.6 metre boat.

Not a bad upgrade, in all.

The property was rebuilt in 2015 under the eye of US architect Paul Moon, with the help of Lovett Custom Homes, and was reportedly on the market for a few months before Joyce and Lloyd snapped it up.

The Irish-Australian Mr Joyce, who has been Qantas boss since November 2008, married Mr Lloyd in 2019 in a ceremony atop the Museum of Contemporary Art at Circular Quay.

The pair had been living in the Cove apartments penthouse they bought for $4.58 million in 2008.

They also own a home at Palm Beach, which they bought for $5.3 million in 2015.

Mr Joyce earned a salary of about $2 million last year and $1.75 million the year before that, a considerable cut on his pre-pandemic earnings of about $10 million per year.

The pandemic hit the aviation industry hard, with Mr Joyce agreeing to an 83 per cent pay cut as international borders slammed shut and travel revenue melted away.

Last month Mr Joyce was forced to withdraw comments he made suggesting customers were to blame for huge delays at Sydney Airport.

Mr Joyce originally pinned the long queues on the “match fitness” of travellers.

He later stressed there were a number of factors at play as the industry bounced back from Covid.
