Pop icon Katy Perry is reportedly in discussions to star in one of Australia’s biggest sporting events.

AFL close to securing Katy Perry to perform at Grand Final

Global pop star Katy Perry looks set to light up one of Australia’s most lavish sporting spectacles, with the beloved singer reportedly in advanced talks with the AFL to headline the code’s Grand Final carnival.

The deal, first reported by The Herald Sun, would bring the ‘Teenage Dream’ and ‘Last Friday Night’ singer back to the 100,000 capacity Melbourne Cricket Ground after she performed there for the T20 Women’s World Cup final between Australia and India in 2020.

League spokesman Jay Allen told NewsWire the AFL would confirm the Grand Final’s pre-game entertainment “shortly”.

“In recent years the Toyota AFL Grand Final headline performances have been world class and we are excited to deliver another spectacular show ahead of the biggest game of the season,” he said.

“We will be in a position to make an announcement on this year’s Telstra pre-game entertainment shortly.”

Exact figures for the deal are not clear, but it is understood the AFL could pay out millions to get the pop icon on stage at the iconic venue.

The Grand Final is booked for September 28.

More than four million people dialled in to watch the 2023 Grand Final between Brisbane and Collingwood.

If she serenades the crowd in September, she would follow other massive entertainment acts like rock legends KISS and The Killers and British pop star Robbie Williams.

Ms Perry boasts a staggering 206 million followers on Instagram.

Her tours sell out stadiums around the world and her songs have been streamed billions of times on Spotify.

Ms Perry will release a new album called 143 on September 20.

“I set out to create a bold, exuberant, celebratory dance-pop album with the symbolic 143 numerical expression of love as a throughline message,” she has said about the new release.
