An eight-year-old boy was rushed to hospital but could not be saved, with police now treating his death as suspicious.

An investigation has been launched after an eight-year-old boy’s suspicious death in northeast NSW.

Authorities were called to a property in Moore Creek, Tamworth at about 6.30pm on Tuesday after the boy was found unresponsive.

Family members performed CPR in efforts to resuscitate the child before paramedics arrived.

The eight-year-old was rushed to Tamworth Base Hospital but could not be revived.

Oxley Police Department officers and detectives from the state’s homicide squad have established Strike Force Fitzgerald to investigate the death.

Police are currently treating it as suspicious.

A post-mortem examination is expected in coming days to determine his cause of death.

Police investigations are continuing.
