A pilot has died after the plane he was flying crashed into crocodile-infested waters, with a passenger managing to escape uninjured.
A pilot whose plane crashed over crocodile-infested waters east of Darwin has died.
Emergency services were called to Fogg Dam in Middle Point about 10.20am on Sunday after reports a light aircraft crashed.
The plane reportedly had two people on-board at the time.
A CareFlight helicopter and Search and Rescue were called to the scene, with a 29-year-old female passenger winched from the scene by the helicopter.
She was uninjured but taken to Royal Darwin Hospital for assessment.
The 63-year-old male pilot was found dead inside the plane.
Police are expected to address the media on Monday afternoon following the incident.
Saltwater crocodiles inhabit the dam, with visitors urged to keep clear of the water’s edge, according to the Northern Territory government’s website.
The Northern Territory Parks and Wildlife said the dam would remain closed until Wednesday in a Facebook post.
“Northern Territory Police, Fire and Emergency Services have requested that Fogg Dam Conservation Reserve remains closed whilst incident management and recovery operations continue,” the post read.
“Expected reopen may be Wednesday 15 January 2025.”
