Parramatta gun Zac Lomax likely to miss opening State of Origin game through injury

One of the first-choice wingers for NSW is already battling a hamstring injury and now a second one has gone down and is set to miss the Origin opener.

Parramatta star Zac Lomax is set to miss up to six weeks with a fractured foot, putting his chances of being ready to play for NSW in the opening State of Origin game in severe doubt and creating a new headache for Blues coach Laurie Daley.

Lomax kicked the winning field goal in the Eels’ 23-22 golden-point win over St George Illawarra on Saturday after suffering the injury earlier in the match.

On Tuesday afternoon, Lomax was named in the Eels side to take on Canberra in Darwin on Saturday night.

But then on Wednesday morning he was ruled out in a crushing blow for both new Eels coach Jason Ryles and Blues coach Daley who will pick his squad for the series opener on May 19.

Lomax could return to action 11 against Newcastle on May 16.

Earlier this week, Daley spoke about putting Lomax on the wing for the Blues in the opening clash with Queensland on May 28 in Brisbane.

“I see Zac as a winger, not a centre at this level,” Daley said.

“If Zac is in the team, it’ll be on the wing, it won’t be in the centres.

“I think there are going to be some high-quality players miss out if they’re all fit. If they’re all fit for selection, then there’s going to be a tough decision.”

Lomax was a revelation for NSW in last year’s series, and Daly also faces a nervous wait to see if Penrith winger Brian To’o can recover from his hamstring injury in time for game 1.
