One swimmer is dead and another two have been hospitalised in a critical condition after being pulled from the water near Apollo Bay in Victoria’s southwest on Sunday.

Victoria Police said the trio were swimming at Marengo when they got into trouble just after 1pm.

A female good Samaritan was able to bring all three men, who were unconscious in the water, to shore and began CPR.

Despite efforts to save his life, one man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The other two men were airlifted to hospital and are yet to be identified.

A report is being prepared for the coroner.
