WA’s new museum has removed a reference to COVID-19 ‘originating in mainland China’ after receiving a complaint.
Perth’s new museum has removed a reference to COVID-19 “originating in mainland China” after multiple complaints, including from the Chinese consul-general.
A spokesperson for the WA Museum Boola Bardip said it was advised last Friday of two “factual errors” on labels in a multimedia display at the Connections gallery.
“The museum was also contacted by the acting consul-general in Perth on Monday about the factual errors,” the spokesperson said on Thursday.
“We were able to advise that the mistakes had already been rectified.”
One error stated coronavirus originated in mainland China.
“The World Health Organisation is still investigating its origin,” the museum spokesperson said.
“The other (error) did not include Taiwan on a map as part of China, which is not in line with Australian government policy.
“These errors were accidental and upon being advised of these, the museum immediately rectified both.”
Australia acknowledges China’s position that Taiwan is a province of China.
In a social media post on Thursday, the museum said it sought “authenticity and accuracy” in all work.
When asked about the incident, Premier Mark McGowan said: “That’s a decision for the museum.”
