Queensland Police have bestowed their highest honour on Alan Dare for his bravery three months after he was gunned down by his neighbours in western Queensland.

Mr Dare was murdered at a Wieambilla property during religiously-motivated act of terrorism carried out by Nathaniel Train, his brother Gareth Train and Gareth’s wife Stacey on December 12.

Queensland Police Deputy Commissioner Tracy Linford said investigators had concluded the Train family had “acted as an autonomous cell” to carry out their “religiously-motivated terrorist attack”.

Diary entries and social media posts by the Train family revealed they believed police were “monsters and demons” before carrying out Australia’s first religiously motivated terror attack.

Mr Dare, 58, had been shot and killed when attending the property after hearing strange noises.

Constables Rachel McCrow, 29, and Matthew Arnold, 26, were also killed by the trio.

Constable Keely Brough fled into bushland while another officer, Randall Kirk, was wounded.

The Train family were later shot dead following an hours-long siege with police.

Mr Dare’s family was presented with a posthumous Queensland Police Bravery Medal at the Chinchilla Botanical Gardens on Saturday.

Queensland Police Service Assistant Commissioner Charysse Pond APM presented them with the award to honour Mr Dare’s actions on the day of the fatal ambush.

The Queensland Police Bravery Medal acknowledges the outstanding efforts of officers or civilians who demonstrate exemplary commitment and dedication to protect the community of Queensland.

The award is usually reserved for officers but can be awarded to civilians who were involved in an incident and performed a similar brave act to a member of the QPS.

It is the highest Queensland Police Service Medal a civilian may receive.
