A former cabinet minister turned independent MP has been caught out in an embarrassing social media blunder.

Member for the NSW seat of Calare, Andrew Gee, took to Facebook to slam his former Nationals party and their “dirty, grubby tactic in this campaign”.

A top comment thanked Mr Gee and praised him for helping them see who the “good guy” was.

“I am new to the area and have received multiple texts from the Nationals and seen nasty ads in the paper from the Teal mob, it has helped me see who is the good guy!” the comment read.

But the positive feedback appeared to come from Mr Gee’s own account.

A spokesperson for the candidate said the comment was made “without Mr Gee’s knowledge by a new and inexperienced member of the campaign team who had access to the page”.

“(The staff member) knows it was an extremely disappointing and unacceptable thing to do.”

“The team member has expressed genuine remorse and distress, their duties have now been modified so it won’t happen again.”

The spokesperson said that Mr Gee “does not condone, approve of or support (the fake comment) under any circumstances.”

The comment was deleted shortly after and the original post remains on Mr Gee’s Facebook page.

Mr Gee quit the Nationals to sit as an Independent in late 2022 ahead of the Voice to Parliament referendum.

He said the party’s opposition to the Indigenous Voice to Parliament, along with the wake of devastation from recent flooding, was the catalyst for his decision.

Mr Gee has held the NSW seat of Calare since 2016.
