Melbourne Storm playmaker Jahrome Hughes showed his shoulder movement on Tuesday after signing a long-term deal

Despite needing hospital treatment for a dislocated shoulder, Storm playmaker Jahrome Hughes has stunned onlookers while discussing his $6m deal.

Jahrome Hughes did his best to defy the doubters after suffering what appeared to be serious shoulder injury by freely lifting his arm in front of TV cameras as the Melbourne Storm star outlined why he re-signed with the club until the end of 2030.

Hughes, 30, dislocated his shoulder last Thursday and medical staff were unable to get it back in despite giving it a “few good yanks”, forcing him to go to hospital in immense pain.

But scans returned positive news, he avoided surgery and is now expected to be back for the finals, with his display of mobility on Tuesday coming on top of the gun halfback’s own confidence.

“I am (confident I’ll be back) but I’m always going to be confident about getting back. I feel pretty good right now,” he said.

“I don’t have it in a sling which is a good sign. I’ve got to work hard to get the strength and mobility back in it, and then hopefully I won’t be too far off.

“It was a lot of pain and took a while to get in. The doc gave it a few good yanks but it wouldn’t fall back in.

“I had to head off to hospital, and thankfully they put it back in place. I had scans the next day and it was all positive news with no surgery required straight away.”

Hughes said the potential lure of earning more money at a rival club or in another sport wasn’t a high priority, and the plan was always for him to stay in Melbourne after he signed a new deal,

Ending speculation over his own future, Hughes hopes it will convince other members of the Storm’s spine to stay as they continue to chase premierships.

The reigning Dally M Medal winner was linked with a move to the Titans last year following reports his wife wanted to return to Queensland, while Hughes would have also attracted huge offers from new franchises in PNG and Perth.

But as tempting as they were, he’s happy in Melbourne and was never tempted by the money, with Hughes confident coach Craig Bellamy will either stay on or that the club will bring in the right person to eventually replace him.

“I know there were rumours and whatnot, but for me and my wife, it was (a case of) how can we stay here, and if it’s possible, let’s do everything possible to stay at this club,” he said.

“I love this club so much, so once they put an offer in, it was hard to say no.

“There were a lot of rumours out there of what other clubs could offer me if I went to market or the new rugby stuff, but money wasn’t even high on what we wanted.

“Money is nice, but for me and my family, it was more happiness. It’s easy to take money, but if you’re not happy, then the value of life is going to really go down.

“For me it’s where I was happiest and (where I could have) success as well. We want to be playing for premierships every year or be in the conversation, and I feel like the Storm has that.

With Hughes’s future sorted, attention now turns to halves partner Cameron Munster, who is locked in until the end of 2027 but has been linked with a possible move to Perth when they enter the competition.

Hughes said he’d play the role of recruitment manager to keep Munster, Harry Grant and Ryan Papenhuyzen, with the star halfback not convinced the Munster rumours are correct.

“I don’t know how true those are,” he said.

“I’ve been around long enough that there are always going to be rumours with all that stuff, and now that I’ve re-signed, they’re probably going to be out there now even more.

“I hope that’s not the case – I think it’s all rumours – but I’ll get in his ear and make sure he doesn’t go anywhere.”
