Melbourne Storm have signed New Zealand rugby sevens star Moses Leo

Melbourne Storm have had super success turning one Kiwi rugby sevens star in to an NRL gun and are going to try with another.

Melbourne Storm are hoping Moses Leo will have the same NRL success as Will Warbrick after signing the New Zealand sevens star to a two-year deal.

Leo was part of the Kiwi team at the Paris Olympics, which failed to win a medal., and will join fellow Olympian turned star winger Warbrick in Melbourne for the 2026 season.

Warbrick won silver at the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo and played rugby sevens with Leo that year before making the code switch and joining the NRL.

He’s become a star member of Melbourne’s backline and is Storm’s leading try scorer in 2024 with 15.

Leo, who played 82 sevens matches for New Zealand, has been identified as a player who can fill a number of outside back positions, including wing, centre and fullback.

He’ll fulfil his contract with the NZRU in 2025 before relocating to Melbourne to take up his two year deal.

said the club was looking forward to welcoming the new signing for the start of 2026 pre-season.

“We’re very impressed with Moses’s qualities and the strong desire he has to test his skills in rugby league,” Storm Director of Football, Frank Ponissi, said.

“Although we won’t get to see him until November next year, signing Moses is a look to the future. It’s important we continue to build our list, especially with the prospect of new teams joining the competition.”

Warbrick recently endorsed the Storm’s pursuit of his former sevens teammate.

“He’s a dynamic guy, a great athlete, got great speed and skill,” he said.

“He’s got a good offload and good footwork so he’s a damaging runner. If you’ve got those traits, I’m sure you’ll do well in the NRL.”

Warbrick is looking to become a premiership player with Storm who will face the winner of Saturday’s clash between Sydney Roosters and Manly in a preliminary final next weekend.
