Matildas star Sam Kerr makes big call on injury

Matildas star Sam Kerr has broken her silence after missing the opening two games of the World Cup due to a calf injury.

Double blow for Matildas ahead of Women’s World Cup clash against Nigeria

Superstar Sam Kerr says she is fit and available for the Matildas’ World Cup clash against Canada on Monday but continues to keep her cards close to her chest.

“I would love to tell you guys everything but … that’s a massive thing that the opposition wants to know,” she said.

“Like (coach Tony Gustavsson) said it’s going to go down to the wire. But I’m definitely going to be available. How we decide to use that is not to be given to the opposition.”

The Australian captain is yet to take the pitch during Australia’s first two games due to a calf injury suffered two days before their opening game against Ireland.

Speaking to the media in Brisbane on Saturday, Kerr said she was fit and available but was unsure what part she will play in the clash against Canada.

Australia’s 3-2 loss to Nigeria on Thursday night leaves them in third spot in Group B and in danger of being knocked out.

They sit one point behind Canada and must win in Melbourne against Canada to ensure they advance.

Matildas coach Tony Gustavsson has been criticised for keeping Kerr’s injury a closely guarded secret, and only revealed she was injured shortly before kick-off in their tournament opener against Ireland.

Gustavsson has defended the decision on the grounds he didn’t want to give their opposition an insight into their line up.

He has said a decision would be made on Kerr’s fitness on match-eve and could come down to a fitness test.

“The plan has always been the same - miss the first two games and then reassess,” Kerr said on Saturday.

“I was out on the pitch today, as good as I can be.”
