A man has died after trying to retrieve clothes from a charity bin on the NSW Central Coast, when he became trapped inside the clothes chute.

It is understood the man was using a bicycle to prop himself up and reach into the chute when he was discovered by a passer-by at about 4.25am.

The bike then slipped, leaving him trapped half in and half out of the charity bin near Westfield Tuggerah where he was later found.

The passer-by saw his legs dangling out of the bin and called emergency services, but sadly the man died at the scene.

Police have established a crime scene but it is understood they are not treating the death as suspicious.

Tarps have been set up and shoppers are being diverted away from the area.
