Man killed, woman seriously injured as car crashes into medical centre at Niddrie, Victoria
A man has died and a woman has been seriously injured after a car mounted the footpath and crashed into a medical centre in a Melbourne suburb.
A man has died and a woman has been seriously injured in a horrific crash in Melbourne’s northwest.
The pedestrian was struck by a car while on the footpath near the intersection of Keilor Rd and Hoffmans Rd in Niddrie at about 9.30am on Monday.
The car then crashed into a medical centre.
The male pedestrian died at the scene.
A woman inside the medical centre was also hit by the car and was flown to hospital with serious injuries.
The driver, a 63-year-old Maribyrnong man, was transported to hospital with injuries under police guard.
It’s understood the driver was travelling north on Hoffmans Rd when the car careened into the medical centre.
The four-storey building was badly damaged in the crash.
“The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision remain ongoing,” a police statement read.
Tanvar, a chef working nearby, was “really upset” by the fatal crash.
He told the Herald Sun he saw two people lying in the ground after the incident.
“We went there and the car was already inside (the centre) and maybe two other people injured inside, lying on the floor,” he told the paper.
He said there was “glass everywhere”.
Another witness, who was taking their daughter to the medical centre, told the outlet they saw the male victim “covered in glass”.
“I saw him, I saw him on the ground after it happened,” they said.
“I just wanted to go and help him.”
The intersection of Keiler, Hoffmans, and Treadwell Rds has been closed in all directions.
Commuters have been told to detour via local streets while emergency services remain at the scene.
“All other traffic to detour using Bulla Rd, the Calder and Tullamarine Freeways, Buckley St and Milleara Rd,” a VicTraffic statement read.
Services for the route 59 tram have also been temporarily suspended between Matthews Ave and Leake St.
“A limited bus replacement service runs between Stop 53a Matthews Ave and Stop 45 Leake Street, servicing existing stops where possible,” a Yarra Trams statement read.
“Bus replacements may take up to 45 minutes.”
