The heating system believed to have trapped and killed a handyman in Sydney’s northwest had “become dislodged” before the “tragic” incident.

Emergency services were called to the scene at Auld St in Eastwood about 8.45am Wednesday.

Initial reports from police stated a water tank had fallen; however, it is now understood the man was trapped under a metal reservoir believed to have been part of a former oil heating system at the home.

The handyman was called in to remove the tank from the rental property when it fell on top of him, 7News reported, with the new tenants having only just moved in days prior.

They weren’t home at the time of the incident.

NSW Fire and Rescue Superintendent Adam Dewberry said it was a “tragic situation”.

“The legs that attached the tank to the ground, or the anchor points, had been cut and somehow it has become dislodged,” he said.

“He has become trapped underneath it suffering significant or fatal injuries.”

NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the man, believed to be in his 60s; however, he died at the scene.

The man is yet to be formally identified.

A NSW Police spokeswoman confirmed the incident had been referred to SafeWork NSW.

“SafeWork NSW Inspectors are attending the site and making inquiries.

“No further information can be provided at this time.”
