A man has been arrested after an NBL basketballer was injured in an alleged one-punch attack on the NSW South Coast on the weekend.

Brisbane Bullets player Harry Froling was hospitalised with a serious head injury after passers-by found him unconscious on the footpath of Crown St in Wollongong about 2:40am on Sunday.

Initial NSW Police inquiries suggest he was punched in the head and fell to the ground.

The 24-year-old centre had played in a basketball game against the Illawarra Hawks before the incident.

Paramedics took him to Wollongong Hospital for treatment, however Mr Froling discharged himself and returned to Brisbane where he attended Prince Charles Hospital.

Scans revealed he sustained head injuries and he remains in hospital in a stable condition for treatment.

Police officers arrested a 19-year-old man after he handed himself into Wollongong Police Station about 3:20pm on Tuesday.

Charges have not yet been laid and inquiries continue.

The Brisbane Bullets have confirmed Mr Froling will miss the remainder of the NBL23 season as he is “currently recovering from an incident” after the away game in Wollongong.

“The Brisbane Bullets are working closely with NSW Police and NBL Integrity Unit as they investigate the circumstances surrounding an alleged assault on Harry Froling,” the team said in a statement.

“As an investigation is underway the club is not in a position to make any further comment, other than to say the players, coaches and staff all send their well wishes to Harry, and his family.”
