Officers were called to the property on Henry St in Gunnedah, in northern NSW, about 8.20am on Friday following reports of “a commotion in a tent”.
Emergency services arrived at the scene minutes after the initial triple-0 call, where they discovered the body of a woman and were “confronted by a male person with an amount of blood on him”, Chief Inspector Michael Wurth said.
Police immediately began CPR on the woman, however, she was pronounced dead a short time later.
The woman is yet to be formally identified, but is believed to be in her 50s.
A 29-year-old man with “blood on him” was arrested at the scene. He was taken to Gunnedah Police Station where he remains in custody.
He has not been charged.
Though police couldn’t “disclose the actual relationship” between the man and woman, it’s believed they were known to each other.
Police believe the man had been a resident of the caravan park for about two weeks, “but the other person who died lived separately,” Inspector Wurth said.
Inspector Wurth described the scene as “traumatic” but said there was no ongoing danger to the public.
A crime scene has been established, with police locating and seizing a weapon, which will be forensically examined by specialist police.
A report will be prepared for the information of the coroner.
