In the wake of the late Queen’s passing, an “appropriate and fitting tribute” has been announced for Sydney’s CBD.

A building will be knocked down and a plaza renamed in the late Queen Elizabeth’s honour in a major commemorative move in Sydney’s CBD.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet announced “Queen Elizabeth II Place” would be built in the wake of the late monarch’s death at Hyde Park Barracks on Macquarie St.

Mr Albanese said “regardless of where people stand” on “other issues”, the late Queen was someone who had given a life of service to the UK and to the commonwealth.

“The naming of this place in her honour is an appropriate and fitting tribute,” Mr Albanese said.

Mr Perrottet said Macquarie St was a “great historical precinct”, and naming it after the late Queen would ensure generations of Sydney-siders and visitors alike can use the plaza.

An annex of the Registrar-General’s building will be knocked down to accommodate the change.

“This is a great historical precinct that we’ve worked hard to revitalise … By knocking down this building … we will have this great plaza opened up for the people of NSW to enjoy, to appreciate, but most importantly to remember the service and dedication of Queen Elizabeth to the great people of NSW,” Mr Perrottet said.

“This is a great global city and we need to make the most of it. This plan will do that,” Mr Albanese said.

“But it is also a plan to commemorate the life of Queen Elizabeth II.”
