‘No, no, no’: Anthony Albanese mocks Liberals in question time grilling

A frustrated Prime Minister has fired back at claims he is out of touch during a tense question time grilling.

NSW Liberal Party's election defeat a 'serious loss'

Anthony Albanese has fired back at claims he is out of touch, mocking the Liberals for failing to learn from the federal election.

During question time on Monday, the Coalition again pressed the Prime Minister over the rising cost of living.

“When will this out-of-touch Prime Minister finally admit that Australian families always pay more under Labor,” Flinders MP Zoe McKenzie asked in relation to rising energy bills.

An animated Mr Albanese shot down the suggestion and put the heat back on the opposition following its poor showing at Saturday’s NSW election.

“Australians have been crying out for action on climate change,” he told the House.

“And for those opposite, even after Saturday, to not have some sort of bellringer, some sort of wake-up call after the Victorian state election – where Daniel Andrews increased his majority.

“I’m not sure what it takes for them to realise that the future and people want action for the future.

“Those opposite can be stuck in the past but we will continue to move forward.”

He noted the Coalition’s opposition to the intervention to cap coal and gas prices and voting against the safeguard mechanism just hours earlier.

“Instead, choose to be observers, they don't participate in any of the processes that are better before the senate or any of the processes here, they just come in here and vote no, no, no, to everything,“ Mr Albanese added.

On Saturday, a Chris Minns-led NSW Labor ousted the state Coalition from power after 12 years in the political wilderness.

The result means Tasmania is the only state with a Liberal government installed.

The election thumping, paired with the bruising federal poll last May, has raised concerns about the sustainability of the Liberal-National partnership.

Former Nationals leader Barnaby Joyce said the NSW Coalition needed time to lick its wounds before it could assess the partnership’s future.

He argued a Coalition split “wouldn’t achieve a lot” despite the wipe-out.

“But that’s a decision that my colleagues in NSW have to make,” he said.

“I really do think it’s time to change the curtains – the curtains were working perfectly well, but after 12 years people want to change.

“The Liberals and the Nationals (were in) power for 12 years, and after 12 years it becomes incredibly hard to win elections because people define their lives by different events and one of those events is a change in politics.

“Now we have to be a very good opposition and of course now the Labor Party have got no excuses.”

Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek applauded the civility of the NSW election, thanking outgoing premier Dominic Perrottet for his respect and candour.

She said the federal opposition leader could learn something from Mr Perrottet.

“ (Mr Perrottet) put his all into it … We are lucky in Australia that we have this sort of peaceful transition of government,” she told Sunrise on Monday.

“It was a very civil campaign, the two leaders should take credit for that and I think it’s probably a lesson to Peter Dutton. You don’t have to have this limitless negativity and hostility.”
