A man will face court on an assault charge next month after an altercation at a Sydney Liberal Party event for controversial Warringah candidate Katherine Deves.

The incident occurred at the Forestville RSL on Friday night where Ms Deves had been billed to speak with federal MP for Mackellar, Jason Falinski.

The 67-year-old is accused of yelling at and behaving aggressively towards Ms Deves’s volunteer.

“I am 66. It’s the first time I’ve actually been thrown out of any venue that serves alcohol in my life,” News.com.au reported him saying.

“My son works in mental health. He’s 29. He works with kids 12 to 25 and he said ‘this just caused a shit storm for us’.

“It’s upsetting everyone. And to compare them with the f..king Nazis for Christ’s sakes. She is a disgrace.”

He was a volunteer for an independent candidate in Mackellar but is no longer in the role.

A police spokeswoman said the man was issued with a court attendance notice for the offence of common assault.

“The man was escorted from the premises,” she told NCA NewsWire.

He will appear at Manly Local Court on May 25.

Ms Deves, who was hand-picked by Prime Minister Scott Morrison, has come under fire over a series of now-deleted comments about transgender people.

She had sought to avoid journalists at the “politics in the pub” event on Sydney’s northern beaches on Friday night.

A staff member at the RSL said they had been instructed by the Liberal Party not to let media in.

The media was told by a Liberal staffer to wait outside, where Ms Deves would be making a statement on her way in.

But after almost 30 minutes after the event was scheduled to begin, Ms Deves’ vehicle sped quickly towards the entrance of the building.

Stopping just short of the door, she walked quickly out, made a statement, before brushing off questions from reporters.

Mr Morrison has repeatedly said he would not dump her as the candidate for Warringah despite the public backlash.
