Former NSW deputy premier John Barilaro will fight allegations that he assaulted a cameraman during an alleged clash in Manly, his lawyer says.

Solicitor Danny Eid on Wednesday entered two not guilty pleas on behalf of Mr Barilaro, who was not present at Manly Local Court.

Mr Barilaro has been charged with allegedly assaulting cameraman Matt Costello on Saturday July 23, in an incident which was captured on video.

He was also charged with damaging a video camera during the alleged confrontation.

Mr Eid told media outside court that the matter would be contested during a hearing at some point next year.

“We’re not lying down on this one,” Mr Eid said outside court on Wednesday.

The charges relate to an alleged scuffle between Mr Barilaro and the cameraman as he was crossing the road late at night in Manly.

Mr Barilaro in July told 2GB that he was out with friends drinking and eating pizza when he was approached outside a bar.

During the interview he said he pushed a camera but denied manhandling the cameraman.

Mr Barilaro claimed he was being “harassed” by the media and the incident occurred at a time when a parliamentary inquiry was probing his selection to a plum trade job to the US.
