Jason Day’s Masters outfits checked off by officials as Cam Smith lands at Augusta with comfort levels high

After pushing the fashion boundaries at the Masters last year, Jason Day confirmed he was under special instructions at Augusta in 2025.

Jason Day found himself on the wrong kind of list at the Masters this year after the Australian’s fashion faux pas in 2024 earnt him a dressing down from officials.

Day, who was forced into a costume change during the opening round in 2024, asked to remove a knitted vest he was wearing as part of a new partnership with Malbon, had to have all of his outfits given the green light by Augusta officials this year.

The world No.36, who is third on the Australian list behind Min Woo Lee (23) and 2013 Masters champ Adam Scott (32), said he was happy to oblige the instructions and the focus should be “on the golf” not his clothes.

“We kind of did, but we kind of cut everything in half. With what we’re supposed to wear they said that’s a little bit much, but that’s OK,” he said after a Tuesday practice round.

“We had to send it in. I think I’m on the short list of guys that have to send their scripting in now. I get it. It was a little bit much on Thursday, so just a shirt and not the pants.

“It’s good. I understand. We’re here for the tournament. This is why we come every April. We’re here to play the tournament and I understand.

“We’ll do what we can with what we have fashion-wise and enjoy playing the tournament.”

Day is one of five Australians at Augusta, including Cameron Smith, who has a tremendous Masters record without winning, having secured five top-10 finishes in his last seven starts at Augusta.

He finished in a tie for sixth last year after finishing third in 2022 and second in 2020, evidence of his affinity with the course and a tournament he rates as the one he wants to win the most.

Smith arrives after his Ripper GC team’s LIV triumph at the brutal Doral course in Miami, comforted by his love of the Augusta layout and his success there.

“I feel like I almost knew the golf course before I got here in a sense because you watch it every year and you’re so into your practice rounds and kind of what you’re doing that you learn it so quick,” he said.

“The course is a lot different though this year. It looks a lot more airy. Lots of trees came down. Wouldn’t say I’ve learned much. I think I’ve learned to be patient over the years. That’s probably the biggest thing. Just got to do that again this year.”

Smith said he even had a “sense of like confidence” when he arrived at the Masters, conceding his LIV golf hadn’t been the best.

“I feel like I’ve been playing good golf; I haven’t got the results that I’ve wanted at the start of this year,” he said.

“So it’s nice coming to a place knowing you’ve had some good results. You think about certain shots and you kind of almost forget about your swing around here, which I think is kind of exactly what I need.

“I think it’s just such a cool spot. It’s hard to describe. It just feels different here. Like you just get out of the car and it just feels like a different world. I think having some good experiences here in the past is kind of nice as well, it kind of eases you into the week.

“So, as many nerves as there will be on Thursday, it’s kind of nice knowing that you’ve been here and you’ve done it before. Hopefully, we can go a few better this year and get it done.”
