Jamie Scott Dempsey faces court over three-hour-long police siege at Parkside
A man accused of causing a three-hour siege in South Australia has fronted court after his dramatic arrest in which he was seen shouting a message.
An Adelaide man has appeared in court after a police officer lost teeth and residents were forced to remain inside during a terrifying siege.
It is alleged neighbours first called police after Jamie Scott Dempsey, 34, was seen kicking cars in Robsart Street at Parkside, in the city’s inner south, just before 5pm on Sunday night.
When the two-person patrol arrived and tried to speak with him, police allege Dempsey assaulted the officers before fleeing into a nearby unit block.
A male police officer was struck in the face, knocking out teeth and leaving him in need of dental work, the Police Association of South Australia said on Monday.
His female partner was left with a knee injury and both taken to hospital for treatment.
More patrols arrived on scene, including the dog squad and STAR operations group, and the unit block was cordoned off.
Some residents were escorted from their homes and others were told to stay inside during an ensuing three-hour-long standoff.
Police said Dempsey was finally arrested without incident about 8pm. He appeared to yell out “I love you baby” as he was loaded into a police wagon.
He faced the Adelaide Magistrates Court by video-link on Monday charged with recklessly causing harm to a police worker and causing harm to a police worker with intent.
Dempsey made no application for bail and was remanded in custody to next appear before the court in February.
