Immunisation body says over-75s need another Covid booster

Australia’s immunisation advisory body says those most at risk should receive yet another Covid-19 vaccination booster.

The federal government’s immunisation advisory body says the most vulnerable Australians should arrange to get yet another Covid-19 vaccination booster.

The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) on Friday released fresh recommendations saying all adults over the age of 75 should get an additional 2023 Covid-19 vaccine dose if six months have passed since their last dose.

That means someone 75 or older, who is up-to-date with their Covid vaccinations, would be having a sixth shot – the initial vaccine, plus five boosters since.

ATAGI also recommends those aged 65 to 74, adults who are severely immune compromised, or those living in aged care facilities should at least consider getting another Covid booster.

“ATAGI continues to encourage all adults who were recommended to have a COVID-19 vaccine dose in February 2023, and who have not yet had one, to receive a vaccine dose as soon as possible,” reads the recommendation.

“For younger people or older adults without severe immunocompromise who have already had a dose in 2023, no further doses are currently recommended.”

Federal Health Minister Mark Butler also urged anyone behind on their boosters to get the jab.

“For other people who were advised to get a 2023 booster but haven’t had one, it’s not too late to come forward and get one,” Mr Butler said.

“It is really important people remember Covid-19 is still with us, so I encourage people to keep following the vaccination advice of the experts on the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation.”
