How to get tickets to Sydney’s New Year’s Eve fireworks display

Everyone is keen to wave farewell to 2020 and move on – but if you want to send the year off in central Sydney, you’re going to need a special pass.

Ringing in the new decade with a bang!

Sydney Harbour will be fenced off for ticket holders only this New Year’s Eve for a celebration unlike any other.

Nobody will be allowed to enter the harbourside “green zones” without a special pass.

Even those who live or work in that area will be required to produce the pass if they re-enter the zone after 5pm on December 31.

“Make sure you book ahead and download your pass if you’re planning on venturing into the harbour area,” NSW Tourism Minister Stuart Ayres said.

The passes will be available to those living inside the zones and their guests, to those who have a booking at a bar, hotel or restaurant within the area, and to select frontline workers.

Green zone residents should be able to get their passes by entering their address into the Service NSW smartphone application.

Those who have made reservations in the area should receive a code that they can use to claim their passes in the app.

Frontline workers will get their passes through their employers.

Even those who work in the green zone will need a pass if they are booked for a shift on New Year’s Eve.

The system is designed to prevent overcrowding near the harbour, where the best spots to watch the Harbour Bridge fireworks are located.

Posting up right outside the green zone is possible, but police will be empowered to move folks away if there are too many people.

Police will have that move-along power across a “yellow zone” that will surround the green one and cover a significantly larger area.

The CBD green zone will hug the waterfront from the Harbour Bridge, covering most of The Rocks and parts of Barangaroo, as well as Circular Quay, the Opera House and the Royal Botanical Garden.

Other, smaller green zones will be established at points on the north side of the harbour.

The yellow zone will stretch as far south as Park Street and Town Hall, as far west as the fish market in Pyrmont, and as far east as Rushcutters Bay Park.

On the north side, the yellow zone will stretch far into North Sydney and east into Cremorne Point.

Anyone who doesn’t have a green zone pass is encouraged to watch the fireworks at home on television. ABC will broadcast the seven-minute fireworks display at midnight.
