An Adelaide grandmother who vandalised street signs with the letters “WTF!” to protest the installation of speed bumps has appeared in court for the first time.

Mary Jean Kolusniewski, 74, was charged after she damaged several signs on Weller St at Goodwood, in the city’s inner south, in July and August.

She pleaded guilty to five counts of property damage during a brief hearing in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

It is alleged up to $10,000 in damage was caused.

After her arrest, Kolusniewski said she was only trying to make the signs look better.

She said the paint, which was applied to street signs signalling the speed bumps, was “activism” instead of graffiti.

Police said they tracked down the grandmother with photos provided by Weller St residents.

Former Channel 7 newsreader Jessica Adamson also recorded a video of a woman taking off in a car after being confronted about the paint.

The City of Unley, in charge of maintaining the signs, recently installed speed bumps in the street in an attempt to slow down drivers.

The plan was met with resistance by a group of residents, who submitted a petition to council.

Kolusniewski covered her face and made no comment to media as she left court after the hearing with her lawyer.

Her next appearance is scheduled for January.
