Ghali: Melbourne man to fight allegation he caused death of three-year-old Emilia Wang
An alleged killer driver has revealed plans to fight charges stemming from the death of a three-year-old girl fatally injured crossing a road with her family.
A Melbourne man accused of causing the death of a three-year-old girl has revealed plans to fight the allegations at trial.
Kamal Ghali, 25, pleaded not guilty to charges of dangerous driving causing death, dangerous driving causing serious injury and reckless conduct endangering life in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday morning.
“Not guilty, Your Honour,” he told the presiding magistrate while standing in a courtroom packed with family and supporters.
Mr Ghali was charged by police after Emilia Mila” Wang was fatally injured about 8.30am on October 17 last year while crossing Heatherton Rd in Endeavour Hills with her family.
Police allege the young girl was struck by a car while walking across the busy road at a pedestrian crossing.
She died in hospital the following day, while the alleged driver of the vehicle was arrested at the scene.
Previously, Mr Ghali’s lawyer, George Ballot, told a court the defence would probe a study of the traffic lights on Heatherton Rd, noting it was a “deadly stretch” where two pedestrians had previously died.
Mr Ghali was committed to stand trial in the County Court where he will appear for a directions hearing next month.
He remains on bail under conditions including living at his Endeavour Hills home, not leaving Victoria and not driving a motor vehicle.
Following Mila’s death, a petition calling for a pedestrian bridge to be built over Heatherton Rd has gained more than 2500 signatures.
